Neptune Lessons

Neptune brings Divine inspiration, but also delusion, betrayal, addiction, and yearning for the unattainable. When Neptune’s longing for transcendence fuses with unmet needs for love, belonging, or self-worth, we can get lost in an emotional fog, chasing illusions. As painful as it is, disillusionment is key to waking up. When the confusion clears, we are left with the raw truth—to find real happiness, we must stop searching for salvation, and take responsibility for meeting our own needs in the here and now.

The Neptune journey involves: being drawn to a dream or experience that feels more real and important than ordinary reality / sacrificing yourself in some way to pursue your dream / trying again and again to find the redemption or bliss you long for, until you exhaust your capacity to continue / challenging your illusions and accepting that the dream as you imagined it cannot happen / processing the devastation of disillusionment and finally letting go / rebuilding slowly and painfully, but finally on solid ground / developing a relationship with the numinous that allows you to touch it without drowning

Neptune Placement

The sign of Neptune depicts the style in which it acts, and the house is the area of life in which its energy is expressed. Neptune stays in a sign for approximately 14 years, so everyone close to you in age will have the same Neptune sign. Houses are determined by your time and place of birth, so it is more individualized.

Neptune in Sagittarius

Overview: Neptune was in Sagittarius from 1970–1984. Sagittarius is a mutable fire sign ruled by Jupiter, representing expansion, belief systems, higher learning, travel, optimism, and the quest for truth. This placement blends Sagittarian idealism with Neptunian mysticism, creating a deep need for the Universe to make sense and to follow an uplifting and meaningful narrative arc. If unbalanced, this need can turn into fundamentalism or spiritual bypassing, where a feeling-driven story becomes more important than the truth.

Overview: The 12th house is Neptune’s home, which amplifies its qualities. The 12th governs the collective unconscious, ancestral memory, hidden realms, and the dissolution of the ego. It is where we leave normal human experience behind and encounter the universal. With Neptune here, you are immersed in invisible currents—personal, familial, collective, archetypal—even political in some cases. The work is to learn how to navigate a vast unseen ocean without being overwhelmed by it.

Aspects to Neptune

When Neptune aspects another planet in your chart, it brings the dreamy, boundary-less experience of Neptune into the domain of the aspected planet. Whether the result is an experience of self-destruction or self-transcendence depends on how consciously you integrate Neptune's energy. To safely surrender to the imaginative and ecstatic potential of Neptune without losing yourself paradoxically requires boundaries, self-respect, discipline, and discernment. Think of it as the balance a surfer has to maintain to ride the ocean without drowning.

While usually positive, it can sometimes veer into overconfidence, gullibility, and magical thinking. The work here is to develop some street smarts and accept the limitations of being human. Neptune Sextile Pluto

Medium Intensity: Orb 1° Soft Aspect

Note: This is a generational aspect, so it is most personally impactful if it contacts a personal planet or one of the four angles. Due to the elliptical orbit of Pluto, the majority of people alive have Pluto-Neptune sextile in their natal chart.

Overview: Pluto represents power, transformation, and the cycles of life and death. Its 500 year cycle with Neptune underpins huge shifts in the spiritual and cultural paradigms of humanity. The current cycle started with the Neptune-Pluto conjunction in 1891. Broadly this cycle seems to be about becoming a global culture, and about the synthesizing of spirituality with psychology. If this sextile is highly connected in your chart, you will be more actively participating in the evolution of collective consciousness.

How to use this information (some disclaimers)

Astrology describes archetypal energy, which plays out differently in its specifics for every person.
Any given aspect (for example Sun-Pluto) will be modified by the signs and houses of each planet, the type of aspect between them, and the rest of the chart. To understand a particular aspect in the context of your entire chart, you would need to consult an astrologer.
There are always things about a person you cannot read in a chart—you cannot tell what gender a person is from their chart, or if it's even the chart of a person. A chart is just a picture of the planets at a moment in time—you can make a chart for anything that is "born" at a particular time, be it a person, an event, a business, or a chicken. That is why charts need to be interpreted in the context of a person's life.
Archetypal energy always has a positive expression and a shadow expression. It's always up to you to grow and develop the positive version of any aspect. Some aspects can be difficult to carry, but they do not doom you to any particular fate.
Your natal chart is the hand you were dealt, but it's up to you what you do with it. If you have difficult placements or aspects, you may need to do attachment healing, shadow work, parts work, trauma healing, or work on your emotional maturity.
An aspect's energy may be suppressed in you, but you may recognize it in those close to you. This is the phenomenon of unconscious projection of our shadow material onto others: we provoke, project, or pick people who express qualities that we have unconsciously suppressed in ourselves. Your own unconscious traits may fascinate you when you see them in others. The best way to work with projection is to try to reclaim these traits in ourselves so we are not playing out unconscious dynamics with other people.
Transpersonal energy (Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) can feel like it is hijacking us without our conscious control. The more we become aware of these energies in our charts, the more we can develop choice in the process.
